SCSC facilitates, in partnership with Mankato Community Education Enrichment + Leisure, three regional chess tournaments annually in the fall, winter and spring. These tournaments are one-day events to celebrate youth and chess. Competition is open to students in grades K–12. Individual awards are presented.
Our tournaments are designed for ALL students playing at all levels. The atmosphere is friendly and we are committed to creating a fun and non-threatening environment.
**NEW** Chess Challenge: Every Move Matters!
Introduce your students to the exciting world of chess through Chess Challenge: Every Move Matters!, a fun and engaging team event for students in grades 4–8. Students compete individually and as school teams in a variety of activities, including traditional chess matches, chess puzzles, trivia, and unique mini-games that reward strategy, critical thinking, and sportsmanship. Whether students are experienced players or just learning the game, Chess Challenge offers a welcoming environment where every move—and every team member—can make a difference.
To help schools prepare, registered teams will receive a collection of age-appropriate chess lessons and activities that can be used throughout the school year in classrooms, after-school clubs, or enrichment programs. These ready-to-use resources make it easy for educators with little or no chess experience to introduce the game and build students' confidence, culminating in a fun and rewarding Chess Challenge event.
