The Stock Market Game, administered locally by the non-profit BestPrep, is a unique educational tool that helps students build skills in a wide range of disciplines including business, math, social studies, language arts, life skills, science, and economics. Students’ skills develop as they use this program to meet the challenge of learning more about the stock market and world of finance. The format is highly motivational and has expanded to serve more than 15,000 students each year.
Students work in teams of up to five members and are given a virtual $100,000 to invest in stocks and mutual funds. During this fourteen-week game, teams receive a portfolio showing their transactions, brokerage fees, interest, and rank based on equity in their portfolios.
Students in grades 412 can play the game. Competitions are divided between grades 46, 79 and 1012. The overall cost to participate is $60 per team, but schools pay only $18 per team. This fee includes costs of operating The Game, technical help, curriculum and materials. The remaining $42 per team is raised through contributions from the investment and business community and is used to cover the costs of operations, teacher training, awards, school recruitment, etc.
