State Chess Prodigies Convene for SCSC Merit Point Tournament
Competitors packed up their chess boards, genius, and aptitude June 21 to head to the first South Central Service Cooperative (SCSC) statewide chess tournament! View video
SCSC hosted the tournament in cooperation with Minnesota Chess Association and School Chess Association. A talented crowd was attracted from a large geographic radius: Buffalo, Shakopee, St. Peter, Rochester, Belle Plaine, Monticello, New Prague, Robbinsdale, St. Cloud, St. Paul, Wayzata, Redwood Falls and even Chandler, Arizona. The age span ranged from four years of age to eighth grade. There were times when a brave rated first-grader battled opponents in middle school and several first-time chess tournament players won trophies.
The atmosphere was friendly and filled with five rounds of chess ending in several tie-breaking blitz matches. All players celebrated their notable wins and losses together at the end of the day recognizing the value of the game is in the lessons learned. The non-elimination tournament featured rounds of chess, projects, games, trophies, medals, certificates and prizes for everyone.
John Flores, United States Chess Federation and Minnesota Chess Association board member, directed the competition at the St. Peter Community Center.
Elementary Winners: Ben Young, Thomas Eickelberg, Andrew Titus and Jack Moran
Secondary Winners: Jonathan Coffin, Leif Nelson, Nick Kern and Levi Walls
Rated Winners: Eddie Kodet, Kevin Moser, Samuel Lessard, and Seamus White
Special thanks to St. Peter Community Center and Dairy Queen of St. Peter for their contributions to a fantastic day!
