Targeting Transition

Targeting Transition is a practical system of materials and training (developed by SCSC partner Ten Sigma) that provides secondary special education teachers with tools to simplify management of the Transition process: a rubrics-driven curriculum, an easy-to-use software program, and activities which enhance the teaching of Transition skills. Transition skills provide special education students with necessary tools to succeed on their own after graduation.

Ten Sigma's Transition materials are available to SCSC members at a discount. Please contact Glenn Morris for more information.

There are seven essential components to Ten Sigma's Targeting Transition program, including:

1. A comprehensive Transition skills curriculum.

2. An easy-to-use survey that assists in identifying student needs.

3. Rubrics that define the Transition skills in detail. These rubrics provide a common language for communication expectations, teaching skills, and documenting results.

4. Complete units of instruction for each skill including lessons, activities and performance assessments to help teachers teach the skills.

5. Effective strategies to enhance the Transition process.

6. An easy-to-use tracking form that tracks student progress over multiple years.

7. Software to manage multiple-year progress.

While the Targeting Transition program is easy to understand and use, training is a very important part of the system. Training shows teachers the procedures to follow, ways to use the material, and provides valuable strategies for succeeding at a higher level:

  • When a whole staff is trained, the staff develops a consistent language and consistent procedures.
  • When a whole staff is trained, students are able to establish and track a long-term plan for developing important Transition skills.
