Traumatic Brain Injury

The frequency of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children and youth is staggering. Each year in the United States, as many as one million children and youth will sustain brain injuries as a result of motor vehicle accidents, falls, sports and abuse. The largest group of traumatic brain injured individuals fall within the fifteen to twenty-four year old age group, but the frequency is nearly as high for youngsters under fifteen years of age. In 1990, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), included Traumatic Brain Injury as a separate disability category in special education.

“Traumatic Brain Injury” means an acquired injury to the brain caused by an external physical force, resulting in total or partial functional disability or psychosocial impairment, or both, that may adversely affect the educational performance of the injured and result in the need for special education. The need for special education is determined through the educational assessment process and must meet specified criteria established by the Federal Government and State of Minnesota.

Services available through the South Central Service Cooperative include:

  • A TBI Train the Trainer Kit developed by the State TBI Network.
  • Regional Resource Library Materials (including “Guidelines for Educational Assessment and Services for Students with Traumatic Brain Injury”).
  • Consultation by Teachers of students with physical and/or other health disabilities with knowledge of implications of traumatic brain injury, educational strategies and accommodations.
  • Regional inservice opportunities, resources and supports for teachers serving students with traumatic brain injuries.
