Physical Health Disabilities

Mission

The mission as PHD Team Members is to provide students with the skills necessary to be successful in the school, home, and community environments.

Philosophy For Physical Health Disabilities

Students who have physical health conditions which adversely affect their capacity for learning in the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains are to be provided equal educational opportunities in all school districts. These students display a wide variety of disabilities requiring intervention to assure that tey reach their optimum independent development in the least restrictive environment. The diagnosed impairment covered may be either congenital or acquired causing academic, physical, social/emotional, and health problems that must be addressed with unique educational strategies.

In order to facilitate successful program planning for these students, a licensed teacher for the physically impaired is required, who will help coordinate the necessary assessment and arrange for the due process requirements. Assessment is done by a multi-disciplinary team, as individual needs dictate, including professionals such as a physical therapist, occupational therapist, school social worker, school nurse, speech clinician, school psychologist, teachers, physicians, etc.

When the student needs are determined, the team, including the student, is responsible for writing the IEP that will minimize interference of the physical condition in the educational program. Based on the IEP, services will be provided as needed. Although these services involve a medically related component, the specific services provdied differ from those in a clinical/medical setting. The primary focus is to enhance the student's educational growth and development. Actualy instruction may be provided by existing classroom teachers or professionals slected from a variety of disciplines with consultation by a Teacher of the Physical Health Disabilities.

This criteria is designed to serve school aged children K-12. Physical Impaired Teacher Licensure is also K-12. There may be times when a PHD teacher may consult with preschool teams but it is necessary to keep in mind that the criteria and the PHD teacher training is academic not preacademic in focus.
