DESCRIPTION
A wonderful fall day welcomed the more than 400 students that attended the SCSC Science & Nature Conference on October 25. While college students at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter had time off to prepare for midterm exams, students in grades 3-6 from 30 area schools used their classrooms to explore science and nature topics ranging from
Bringing the Zoo to You
to
Work Your Brain.
The Science Museum of Minnesota presented about water conservation to the third and fourth grade students for a keynote presentation. Fifth and sixth graders enjoyed a presentation on the brain as a closing to their day.
Students also selected three breakout sessions to attend throughout the day. These hour-long sessions are designed to be small group interactions on a specific topic in science and nature. This year’s diverse selection of topics allowed students a wide selection.
“It was gross and fun at the same time,” said a student about the session
The Icky, the Gross and the Yuck
, facilitated by Chrystal Dunker, Executive Director of the Prairie Ecology Bus Center. Ms. Dunker discussed some of the more “icky” animals in nature including leaches and maggots.
Many thanks go to the presenters that gave of their time and talents to make this day a success!
