Participants will be guided through MDE's suggested checklist for a comprehensive, local Literacy Plan. Minnesota Statutes 2010, section 120B.12 regarding "Reading Well by 3rd Grade" will be reviewed. Participants will have a better understanding of the components necessary to complete and implement an effective Literacy Plan. Team work time and networking opportunities will also be available throughout the day. Please bring your laptops! Target Audience: Elementary Principals, Lead Teachers, Title I Teachers, Curriculum Coordinators, and Instructional Coaches Intended Outcome: Teams (No more than 4, please) are encouraged to attend. The group will become well versed in the state's statute and have begun drafting a comprehensive Literacy Plan for their school.

Pain-Free Blogging Webinar for Competency Education Innovators: How to (Quickly) Turn Your Passion into Words
CompetencyWorks is an initiative launching mid-May to support competency education innovators in sharing their knowledge and learning about best practices across the country. The resources on CompetencyWorks will be by innovators for innovators as we seek to create an education system in which students master the skills and dispositions they will need throughout their lives.
This webinar is designed to introduce practitioners, educational leadership, and community members to the basics of blogging with a special focus on effective strategies for sharing your knowledge. Jami Bernard of Barncat Publishing will provide an overview for getting started, a number of tips to help you dodge common mistakes, and how to have fun blogging. Three participants will be selected beforehand to work with Jami to take their draft and transform it into a powerful post. Think of it as a digital fishbowl exercise.
There is some preparation for this webinar. First, we will ask you to fill out a quick survey to help Jami Bernard customize the webinar to the needs of the participants. Second, participants will be asked to submit a draft of a short blog posting on any topic related to competency education to Chris Sturgis at chris@metisnet.net by Monday April 30th. Third, we will select three people to receive individual coaching during the webinar with Jami Bernard. We will let you know by end of day Tuesday May 1st if you have been selected.

Jefferson County Public Schools (Jeffco), in Golden, Colorado has been able to build comprehensive and successful blended & online learning programs while ensuring teacher success, program savings and building on the various learning needs within the district. As the largest school district in Colorado, Jeffco Public Schools needed a way to provide a quality education that prepares all students for successful futures.
At this webinar, Judy Bauernschmidt, Director, Student Online Learning at Jefferson County Public Schools will provide information about their blended and online program implementation including their approach for professional development using online Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to support collaboration and sharing best practices with peers. They have trained 500+ teachers in the district to be online and blended teachers and started an online/blended teacher certification program in Jeffco to meet the growing demand for trained online/blended teachers.
Jeffco has expanded online and blended learning offerings to include more flexible options for students. Jeffco offers all six models of online and blended learning as defined by "The Rise of K-12 Blended Learning" by the Innosight Institute. The models include:

The English Language Arts Common Core Standards require significant shifts from how we have traditionally viewed literacy instruction. The Standards represent sweeping reform and present an urgent undertaking for Minnesota as well as the nation. Minnesota requires implementation of these Standards in the 2012-13 school year. The Standards require noteworthy changes in thinking, in organization and in content which may necessitate changes in textbooks and curricular resources, professional development, instructional strategies, interdisciplinary instruction and assessment. As framed by six shifts in literacy instruction, this professional development will present a deep understanding of the Standards. The six shifts include: o Shift #1 K-5 Balancing Informational and Literary Text: Focus on Process as Well as Content o Shift #2 6-12 Knowledge in the Disciplines: All Teachers are Reading Teachers o Shift #3 Staircase of Complexity: Increase the Rigor of Text o Shift #4 Text-Based Answers: High-Level, Text Based Responses o Shift #5 Writing from Sources: More Argumentative Writing, Less Narrative Writing o Shift #6 Academic Vocabulary: Be Strategic with Tiers of Vocabulary The day will combine key information with the practical. The Standards represent sweeping reform and present an urgent undertaking for Minnesota as well as the nation. Minnesota requires implementation of these Standards in the 2012-13 school year. The Standards require noteworthy changes in thinking, in organization and in content which may necessitate changes in textbooks and curricular resources, professional development, instructional strategies, interdisciplinary instruction and assessment. As framed by six shifts in literacy instruction, this professional development will present a deep understanding of the Standards. The six shifts include: o Shift #1 K-5 Balancing Informational and Literary Text: Focus on Process as Well as Content o Shift #2 6-12 Knowledge in the Disciplines: All Teachers are Reading Teachers o Shift #3 Staircase of Complexity: Increase the Rigor of Text o Shift #4 Text-Based Answers: High-Level, Text Based Responses o Shift #5 Writing from Sources: More Argumentative Writing, Less Narrative Writing o Shift #6 Academic Vocabulary: Be Strategic with Tiers of Vocabulary The day will combine key information with the practical.
